Burning truck caused N1 closure

The N1 is still closed in both directions, following an earlier accident at the Atterbury bridge in Pretoria East.

Several people escaped with their lives after an out of control truck collided with three vehicles on the N1 south under the Atterbury road bridge in Pretoria.

The truck which carried explosive liquid overturned and came to rest under the Atterbury bridge where it burst into flames.

The truck also hit one of the legs of the four legged crane at the construction scene of the Atterbury bridge.

Construction engineers on the scene analysed the situation and says that the crane is unstable and are not safe at all. "We have desided to close the N1 highway both direction. There are possibilities that the highway will remain closed and it might open it in the morning," says deputy Community Safety spokesperson, Console Tleane.

"Our advice is that people must avoid this road and rather use the R101 and other alternatives".

Only one person from one of the vehicles sustained minor injuries and was transported to the Netcare Pretoria east hospital for further treatment.
